Bio 154 - Animal Behavior

Project 1: Ethogram.

You are to construct 2 ethograms.

1. Any non-human animal

2. Yourself.

Each ethogram should:

1. cover a 24 hour period
2. break all behavior into categories.
3. chart or diagram the behavior (pie chart, segmented column).

For the Animal, you may look up ethograms in the literature.

For the human, you are to use yourself or roommate.

However, in selecting behavior traits, treat the human as an animal subject; that is, you have no insight into what the animal is thinking.

example:
sitting and talking = social contact
studying = inactive observation?

You may discuss this and work in groups. However, I want individual reports.

Process:

Start out by listing categories of behavior that you might expect to observe.

Figure out a method of observation; sampling technique.

Write-up

1. Turn in categories and discuss how you chose what to use.
2. Did categories change as you began to collect data?
3. Indicate sampling technique for observations.
2. Turn in two charts. (pie diagrams, etc.)
3. Discuss differences between the charts or what struck you about the charts.
