Bluebird Recovery Program (CBRP) By GLEN CHAPPELL Founded in 1994, sponsored by National Audubon Society California and affiliated with the North American Bluebird Society (NABS), CBRP is "for the encouragement and preservation of cavity nesters, especially bluebirds, anywhere in the West." The organization is non-profit, has no paid staff, and is supported entirely by the efforts of volunteers and donations accepted by the Mt. Diablo Audubon Society on CBRPs behalf. CBRP members had reported on 2,400 nest boxes by the end of 1996, with more than 5,000 cavity nesters fledged--over 3,000 of them western and mountain bluebirds. CBRP welcomes membership from the public who wish to support its program, and especially seeks those who will place appropriate nest boxes in the proper habitat, faithfully monitor the birds progress through the nesting season, and report yearly on the results. Pomona Valley Audubon is supporting this effort to restore the bluebird populations by offering to its members pre-assembled nest boxes at the cost of materials. Our organization had five active participants this past year monitoring about 35 nest boxes. We had five boxes used and fledged |
12 bluebirds. We have high hopes
for next year that by having our boxes hung and ready by February that we will have even
more fledglings. If you would be interested in monitoring a few of these boxes or establishing your own trail please contact Glen Chappell at 909-981-1996. We have boxes ready to go, along with a pamphlet on how to monitor and how to keep the records. Western bluebirds in our area like open grassy fields, like the athletic fields at the colleges. Two of our long time members, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Scudder hung a nest box in a sycamore tree in their parkway in northern Rancho Cucamonga and enjoyed watching a young family fledge out after a few weeks. Suzanne and I had a plain (oak) titmouse use one in a alder in our small backyard. It was fun having this musical little couple set up house just 20 feet from the back door. Unfortunately this turned out to be an unsuccessful nest because the nest became infested by the Argentine ants that have been so terrible this year.
