Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park

Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park is a large birding area of both wild and manicured habitat. We have our biggest species count here for the winter Christmas count due to the large deep lake, coastal chapparel, walnut and pine woodlands, grass and raparian areas.

Endangered species such as California Gnat Catcher, and subspecies of interest like coastal cactus wren make their homes here and offer reserchers an opportunity for better understanding of their needs. Will this area be included in the proposed gnatcatcher preserve?

This is a FEE area except on weekdays in the winter.

2001 Rarities-- Dec 01/02 winter--- Hepatic Tananger & Coastal Gnatcatcher are found south side of 210 / 57 entrance road across from first parking and grassy area. Walk south on dirt road if tananger not visable or audible. Walk a bit further on dirt road to appropriate sage/cactus habitate for gnatcather. Wood Duck is usually on southeast side of lake. Also watch for this year's white pelicans, osprey, golden eagle, loons, etc. this winter.

2000 Rarities--- Jan/Feb--- Hepatic Tananger & Yellow Breasted Sapsucker are to be found and refound in the trees around the large restrooms in Picnic Valley. Enter the Park from the west off the 210 / 57 Freeway. Continue straight ahead and rightish to first large restroom building.
