Chino Hills State Park needs our HELP! Please visit the park for birdwatching and then attend their public hearings to determine the future direction of development for the park. Remember that this is THE LAST LARGE WILD TRACT of land in the basin! We need to keep much of it in wilderness, low human use condition.

 PVAS Field Trip 2001
Wed, April 11. CHINO HILLS STATE PARK.

Alyssa Ing, Naturalist at Chino Hills State Park, is asking for our assistance in establishing a monthly bird walk. If you live nearby, and are interested in learning more about the park, what better way than to volunteer to lead a bird walk. The park has several areas that are suitable to group walks, and include riparian areas, as well as open grasslands. There is already an established bird list for the park, which will probably be expanded with regular walks. If you are interested in helping out, please call Suzanne Chappell at 909 981-1996. She will give you more information and put you in touch with Alyssa.

Chino Hills is the last large wilderness tract in the Los Angeles basin. It offers 13,000 acres of wilderness area and has over 65 miles of trails. Activities include camping, hiking, mountain bike riding and horseback riding. Specific directions are on the larger version printable map above.

There is one road into the headquarters area from Chino Hills on its north and a short road up to a high overlook viewing spot. Both are good for little to no walking park goers. ...and then there are the 65 miles of trails to wander for those with more energy! Two additional walkin points of entry, Carbon Canyon to the west and Yorba Linda Blvd. to the south, allow access without paying the fee.

Note that this official line does not include birdwatching or promote the wild flora and fauna aspects of the park. That is up to us to help discover and protect in this new park that is operating on a shoestring budget! ---both in patronage, volunteer efforts, and public voices. Pomona Valley Audubon members will be helping to census the bird-life, create bird list and educational materials and lead bird walks in the splendid grassland, raparian, oak and walnut woodland and coastal sage habitates. Join us for the fun! for the work! and for the satisfaction!
