Kents Cavern is one of the most important cave archaeological and paleontological sites in Britain. Acheulian biface flint artifacts recovered from the cave are amongst the earliest evidence humans in Britain. The cave bear remains are the most abundant and important from any British site. Kents Cavern has also played a central role in the 19th Century history of archaeological and paleontological thinking.
Our recent work has enabled the reconstruction of William Pengelly’s 19th Century excavations, and has provided new insights into the complexities of the stratigraphy. The new chronology of Kents Cavern reveals that deposit are present from all the interglacials of the past half-million years- a record unique for any British cave.
