The single species, A. bernensis, is known from cave sites in eastern Dominican Republic and southwestern Haiti. It has been unconvincingly proposed that the animal survived into recent times based on a radiometric date of 3850 +/- 135 yrbp on charcoal collected 10 cm above the fossil stratum in Cueva de Berna, Dominican Republic. A more closely associated date from Caverne Sawo, Haiti  yielded 9550 +/- 150 yrbp.
