The West Indian Spiny Rats (family
Echimyidae) are
represented on Hispaniola by the genus Brotomys, with two nominal species (B.
voratus from the Dominican Republic and B. contractus from Haiti).
The genus
is closely related to Spiny Rats of the genus Heteropsomys (Puerto Rico) and
Boromys
(Cuba). B. voratus has been claimed to have gone extinct within "the last 50
years" but this has not been supported with published radiometric evidence.
