The single species E. obliquus, is known only from Puerto
Rico. Elasmodontomys was a large, terrestrial rodent with a body weight of
~14 kg. The last dated occurrence of the animal is 5410 +/- 60 yrbp from a cave near
Barahona, northwestern Puerto Rico.
Closely related to Amblyrhiza of
Anguilla and St. Martin, Clidomys of Jamaica and Quemisia of
Hispaniola.
