The Hispaniolan hutias consist of five species, with body sizes spanning 0.5 to 5 kgs, only one of which survives to the present. The living species (P. aedium) is arboreal, nocturnal and rare. P. aedium females produce a single young per litter, with a gestation period of 119 days.
