The remains of the single species Q. gravis have
been found in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Similiar in size to Elasmodontomys,
Quemisia has been considered by some to be the animal that Oviedo refered to as the
"quemi" in a written account of the animals of Hispanola which was published
about 25 years following the arrival of Spaniards on the island. However, no
radiometric dates are yet available for Quemisia, and its scarcity in collections
may contraindicate survival into the late Holocene
