The West Indian rodents are quite diverse and consist
of four families, fifteen genera, and as many as sixty nominal species. Four
separate radiations can be recognised; echimyids (Spiny Rats) into the Greater Antilles
(excluding Jamaica); Heptaxodontids into the Greater Antilles (excluding Cuba) and
northern Lesser Antilles, Capromyids (hutias) into the Greater Antilles and Bahamas, and a
late Pleistecene invasion of Muroids (in this case, "rice rats") into the Lesser
Antilles and Jamaica.
