Marine Biology: How to get your hands wet.

If you're thinking about a career in Marine Biology or Marine Ecology, nothing beats a full-time, in-residence experience at a marine laboratory. Below are a couple of links to help you find summer courses and research opportunities. Some of these are paid opportunities, in other cases the labs may have scholarships or fellowships to help with course costs.

Where to find courses and internships:

1. The National Association of Marine Laboratories, has links to laboratories nationwide, and lists jobs and courses www.naml.org

2. The American Society of Limnologists and Oceanographers lists opportunities for students www.aslo.org/students.html

3. Dr. Jeff Levinton's Marine Biology website at SUNY Stony Brook is a good resource for summer programs, graduate programs, and marine labs. life.bio.sunysb.edu/marinebio/mbweb.html

4. Other academic societies related to marine ecology, which may have listings or career advice:

5. Major marine labs on the US West coast:
All of these offer courses and/or research opportunities

6. Programs during the academic year:

7. NSF's REU program offers paid undergraduate research opportunities nationwide, including some with a marine focus. www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu
